We Can Move Our Lives to the Digital Universe with Metaverse

The Metaverse is a network of always-on virtual environments where many people can interact with each other and digital objects through their own virtual representations, that is, avatars. Metaverse; We can think of it as a combination of immersive virtual reality, massively multiplayer online role-playing game, and the web. There are three basic aspects of the Metaverse. These; presence, interoperability and standardization.

Presence is the feeling of being in a virtual space with other individuals, of embodiment. A sense of embodiment is known to improve the quality of online interactions. This sense of presence is achieved through virtual technologies such as head-mounted VR glasses. Interoperability is the ability to travel seamlessly between virtual spaces with the same virtual assets, such as avatars and digital elements. Standardization is to ensure interoperability of platforms and services in the metaverse.

Historical Path to the Metaverse
For the last 30 years, an extraordinary technological revolution has been taking place: the construction of a man-made, digital universe. This started in the 20th century with transistors, computers and the Internet. Thus, human activities such as trade, communication and social relations have begun to move from real to digital. For example, we no longer go to the market, we can buy the product we want with a few clicks. We don't have to wait months to communicate with our distant friends, we can talk to whomever we want instantly. Our music, cinema and games are no longer in the real world, but in our pockets.

While we are breaking our ties with the physical world one by one, the technological revolution continues on its way: Tremendous progress has been made in technologies such as central processing units, graphics processing units, data processing, machine learning, artificial intelligence and cryptography. By the 2010s, these had paved the way for even higher-level technological ideas: blockchain technology, for example; It has made it possible to process data securely without being centralized. Although the most popular application of blockchain is cryptocurrencies, this technology can be applied anywhere where we do not want power to be concentrated in one hand and privacy is important: digital identities, state administration, healthcare, insurance, law are just a few of the areas where blockchain applications are beginning to emerge.[1]

But as you can notice, the theme of all these transformations is the same: Digitizing the processes and interactions in the physical world... Although all these were developing, it was not clear how these seemingly independent technologies would be connected to each other. Until the "metaverse" was born.

[Hiro Protagonist] Of course he's not meeting real people. It's all part of the moving picture his computer draws based on the characteristics coming from the fiber optic cable. People are pieces of software called avatars. [Avatars] are audiovisual bodies that people use to communicate with each other in the Metaverse. Hiro's avatar is now also on the street, and if couples getting off the monorail look towards it, they can see Hiro the same way Hiro sees them. These people have their own laptops; Hiro in Los Angeles and possibly four teenagers sitting on a couch in a Chicago suburb could strike up a conversation. But they probably don't talk to each other more than they actually can.

What is the Logic of the Metaverse?
The basic logic of the Metaverse can be explained simply as follows: The aim is to convert everything that resides on the 2D internet or that can be digitized in our lives into 3D and transfer it to a digital universe.

The immediate metaverse or sub-metaverses are not necessarily a literal copy of the Earth; It can also consist of dream worlds or artistic designs: Different planets, imaginary worlds, Jurassic Park, Matrix, whatever comes to your mind... We can compare this to how people use virtual backgrounds in Zoom calls: In the Metaverse, that background will be the "space" and people will , they will be able to be in that space with their avatars, they will be able to physically interact with the space and each other, they will see each other as if they were face to face; They will be able to distinguish gestures, facial expressions.

As you can see, thanks to the metaverse, we will move the internet from a 2-dimensional screen to a 3-dimensional digital universe. In fact, the next step will be to further enrich the visual, auditory, olfactory and tactile processes, that is, the sensory experience, with the Neuralink-style brain chips that we explained in our previous articles; because the interactions can be sent as a direct signal to your brain.

As you can see, the metaverse will be quite different from today's restrictive virtual reality experiences. Unlike today's virtual reality, the metaverse will be a massive shared virtual space that combines virtual reality and augmented reality, allowing avatars to seamlessly transition between virtual spaces on the platform, where hundreds of millions of participants can simultaneously engage and physically interact in three dimensions.

People can perform many actions in this virtual universe that they can do in reality; They can do studies, get education, get a job, shop, do sports, play games, watch or read something, socialize by participating in various events, create their own adventures and worlds, and participate in fictional universes such as Star Wars. To give a simple example, people living in different parts of the world can come together and have fun or work on projects together in this virtual universe that hosts various virtual worlds. Unlike the Internet, the metaverse allows people to have three-dimensional physical interaction with each other in a virtual universe. With the Metaverse, people can physically interact with each other whenever they want, as if they were in the same place, even though they are far away.

So metaverse; It is a spatial internet that can be experienced three-dimensionally with new connections, devices and technologies at any place and time. Metaverse can also be expressed as experiencing a game in three dimensions, without the need for devices such as screens and keyboards. For example, imagine going inside three-dimensional video games like Minecraft, Roblox, PUBG, and Fortnite and being able to physically experience that virtual world as if it were real. Simply put, the metaverse is an evolved internet in which you exist rather than look.

Metaverse Can Make Sense of Modern Technologies!
As you can see, the metaverse will bring together new technologies that have risen recently and add meaning to them: For example, cryptocurrencies can be the basis of the economy in this virtual universe. Similarly, you'll want to adorn your avatar in the virtual world the same way you adorn yourself in real life. This would be a great use case for NFTs! Just as in the real world, we buy make-up, modify our cars, do our hair, buy the latest phone or clothes and express ourselves in that way; We will try to reflect ourselves in the best way possible in the metaverse, which will include everyone we know and don't know. As we become dependent on the Metaverse, what we have there will be as important and valuable as what we have in real life; Because as the simulation power increases, we will have difficulty distinguishing that digital universe from reality. NFT will guarantee that what we buy in this virtual world belongs to us.

Virtual reality (VR) and augmented reality (AR) will be the main technologies of great importance in realizing the metaverse. With the help of augmented reality technologies, which are slightly different from virtual reality, people can see a lot of information about that city pass before their eyes through AR-supported virtual glasses while traveling in a city. This may include traffic and pollution data, a variety of information about the natural environment or local history. If you cannot fully imagine what augmented reality (AR) technology looks like, we recommend you watch the video below starting from the 2nd minute.

Metaverse is not just AR; It refers to a much more comprehensive technology that will include various virtual technologies, especially VR. The Metaverse can be quite similar to many online video games popular today. People around the world; You can interact in a virtual universe with virtual environments similar to PUBG, Roblox, Minecraft and Fortnite.

The metaverse may have great importance not only as a technological product, but also in a more philosophical sense. If the arguments we explain in our Simulation Theory video, which you can watch below, are true, creating a digital version of the universe may be the destiny of our species: Species that find themselves somewhere in the middle of existence will want to simulate their past and future, and even their own universe. The construction of the metaverse may be the first big step we take on the path to what we explained in this video.
